A Salute to the Beaches we Love - the Best Beach Movies AroundWe must admit that the cinema has played an important role in cultures worldwide, and we all have our favorites: from action and romance to adventures and comedy, the greatest films of the past to the next new movie release. We must also admit that as human beings, we cannot deny that attraction we have to sand and sea, and the waters of beaches everywhere continue to call us, relax us, and provide us with joy, exhilaration, and general recreation fun. Well, with two of the most universally loved things on the planet, it's no wonder that we've always loved beach movies! From Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello to Sean Penn and even Elvis Presley, we've all been entertained by beach movies at some point in our lives, and many of us have no problems remembering the scenes and scenery that made us first want to leave our real lives behind and jump right into the beaches of the silver screen. Well, short of showing movie trailers and previews, here is a list of what we think are some of the best beach movies around: Back to the Beach (1987): Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello are back together in this tribute or spoof on the surfing and rock and roll feel good beach movies of the 1960's. After a long hiatus from the days of hanging out at the beach, this movie shows the grownups heading back to the surf and sand with their own kids. A good familiarity with the original films will certainly go a long way in appreciating this one! Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982): Cameron Crowe's introduction to film making, and not a bad start! This movie not only made entire populations want to move to California, but it also jump started the careers of many now famous actors. This classic can still be found playing on the airwaves and is a perpetual favorite for those that rent and buy movies. Girls, Girls, Girls (1962): Elvis Presley, rock and roll, girls, boats, and beaches. We're not sure how this one could have possibly gone wrong. This oldie might not be on the top lists for today's online movie rentals, but it does present an always entertaining, light hearted musical film. The movie features a story of a boat loving fishing guide who needs to find a way to buy the boat he built with his father after finding out that his boss is retiring. Beach Party (1963): The Frankie Avalon beach movie that started it all - what else can we say? Even though Gidget had already been out, this is considered by most to be the original beach film that painted the scene of rock and roll, surfers, and girls and boys getting together. The plot centers around an anthropologist that heads to the beach to study the dating habits of these beach types, and his experimentation calls for stealing a girl away from her boyfriend to see just how jealous he'll get! Catalina Caper (aka Never Steal Anything Wet) (1967): This was one of the last movies of the Beach Party genre of films, and it's portrayal of the Los Angeles beach and surfing subculture is wonderful. Bikinis, rock and roll, surfing, and a stolen scroll make up the plot for this California beach movie, and Little Richard even makes an appearance! Next time you're considering pay per view, you might want to reconsider - no one should miss one of the last of these great beach films! |
