"Zonies" Favor the Right to Drink Responsibly on Pacific BeachEvery summer the residents of San Diego see them heading for the beach in masses. You might be thinking of surfers or girls in bikinis, but we're talking about summer tourists from Arizona, frequently called "Zonies" by many local residents. San Diego sees an influx of visitors during the temperate summer months and remains a refuge from the sweltering heat of big cities like Phoenix and Tucson to the east. The wide variety of rental properties offer a lease option that can fit into almost any family's size or budget.Residents of Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, and the surrounding areas have mixed feelings about the annual visitors from Arizona to the area. More and more businesses agree that the summer months, which include visits from residents of the Grand Canyon State, is good for business. Some residents don't like the fact they also represent an increase in traffic and a more populous San Diego for the summer months. It is apparent that residents seem to have varying opinions on the subject. Many Arizona residents have a long history of coming each summer to escape the intense summer heat. Some of the summer visitors from Arizona have a long history of vacationing in the area and have even started leasing properties where there is a rent with option to buy clause in the rental agreement. San Diego has seen many rent to own type contracts offered to annual renters as a response to the cooling housing market in the Untied States. In addition to leasing beautiful rental properties, some renters have taken advantage of laptop rent to own opportunities, so that they don't have to bring their personal electronic equipment from Arizona for the summer months in the San Diego area. Many summer visitors agree that responsible drinking on public beaches is something that everyone should be able to enjoy, regardless of whether or nor you're from El Cajon or Scottsdale. It is a shared human pleasure to enjoy at nice glass of wine or an ice-cold beer after a day of beach activity. Walk along the Pacific Beach boardwalk on any given summer evening and you will see a mixture of year round residents and summer visitors taking in the sunset, hoping to spot the elusive green flash and enjoining an alcoholic drink of their choice. The consensus seems to remain that it is unfortunate that individuals are not allowed to walk a few hundred feet, sit down on the beach, and enjoy a responsible drink in the full glory of Mother Nature. One of the great writers of our time, Ernest Hemmingway, reflected on this creature comfort with his comment, "Drinking is a way of ending the day." It is obvious that both residents and visitors are passionate about having the choice to finish off the end of their workday or vacation with a responsible drink. |
